The Lascannon is a formidable weapon, capable of piercing most vehicle armour and killing powerful and heavily armoured troops. The fact that it has a slow recharge and expends its power in a single blast against a single target makes the weapon a poor anti-personnel weapon.

The primary difference between a Lasgun and a Lascannon is the size. While the Lasgun is easily handled by a Guardsman, the Lascannon requires special housing. Due to their enhanced bodies however, Space Marines may carry them integrated into their Power Armour. Each Lascannon charge pack is good for only one shot. This means it has a slow rate of fire due to the need to change the pack after each shot, and the packs cannot be recharged like those of a Lasgun. The power of the Lascannon means that the barrel is damaged quickly but can easily be changed, much like the Lasgun.

They are very reliable as the technology has been perfected rather than scrounged from STCs. As such they are the preferred weapon type by many Imperial Commanders as, even though other weapons may have other advantages, the reliability of the weapon is most important on the battlefield.
