Mont'au translates roughly as 'the terror'. It refers to the dark and violent time before the Ethereals arose in Tau society. They survived in this period because the Imperial ships sent to cleanse the world were destroyed by a massive, rapidly moving Warp Storm. Also, the rise and fall of Goge Vandire and the Age of Apostasy distracted the Imperium from their previous expansion projects and the Tau were forgotten.

The Mont'au ended with the arrival of the Ethereals and the instigation of the Caste System and the notion of the Greater Good on all Tau.
