Morningstar was a world of the Imperium.[1a]

Morningstar was a moderately advanced world, but most notable for the fact that it was able to somehow survive the Age of Strife intact. The world was discovered by the Imperium during the Great Crusade and had since become wracked by devastating magnetic storms, resulting in the Planetary Governor, Konrad Vargha, issuing a distress call.[1b] This led to an attempt by the Thousand Sons and Iron Warriors Legions, led by their Primarchs (Magnus the Red and Perturabo, respectively) to evacuate the world.[1b] They were opposed by a cult known as the Sons of Shaitan, who claimed that the populace's death and the destruction of the planet were part of some great plan.[1b]

During the evacuation, Magnus charged Atharva to lead a team of legionaries beneath Zharrukin, in order to uncover a secret Magnus had seen that lay beneath the city. Underneath the city, Atharva and the others found the original Terran colony ship that carried the first settlers to Morningstar and opened it.[1d] However, they found themselves possessed by a gestalt psychic entity known as Shai-Tan.[1e] Magnus himself led a rescue team to Zharrukin, defeating Shai-Tan and imprisoning it within the Book of Magnus.[1f]

Magnus and Perturabo were forced to enact Exterminatus on the planet and annihilate the evacuation fleet in order to prevent the corruption of Shai-Tan spreading.[1g]
