Nerat Kirine was the Shade Captain of the 18th Chapter of the Raven Guard Legion, the Ashen Claws, during the Great Crusade. Exiled by Corax, his Chapter returned to the Imperium to raid the Nostramo Sector during the Horus Heresy before disappearing into the Ghoul Stars again.[1]

Biography

Born on Terra, Nerat Kirine was among the Xeric tribesmen who formed the XIXth Legion's early recruits. Brutally efficient at the hit and run tactics favoured by the Legion, he became Shade Captain of the 18th Chapter, known as the Ashen Claws and devised the strategy utilised in the Battle of Hell's Anvil that established assignment to the XIXth Legion as a death sentence to Imperial Army units.[2]

After the Battle of Gate Forty-Two in 002.M31, he and the survivors of his Chapter were sent into the Ghoul Stars as part of a nomad predation fleet under the command of the Deliverance-born Praetor Calvus. After the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, the Ashen Claws returned from the Ghoul Stars to raid the Nostramo Sector, sacking several of the Night Lords' strongholds for munitions and war materiel. He was in command of the Ashen Claws at the Battle of Desperation, where he claimed to owe no loyalty to either the Emperor or the turncoat Warmaster.[1]
