Royal Volpone
The Royal Volpone were Imperial Guard Regiments active during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.
Overview
Drawn from the aristocratic families of Volpone, the Royals were proud to the point of arrogance.[2a] The 50th, in particular, called themselves "the Bluebloods"[2a][2b], considering themselves "the noblest regiment in the Imperial Guard."[2a]
They are accompanied by lowborn Volpone servants, called Mil-serves. Like all of Volpone's lowborn, the Mil-serves are not permitted to carry arms, even during battles. Any that are caught with one, face being hanged or whipped to death by their Regiments. Because of their status, some Royal Volpone are also abusive towards the Mil-serve and during the time of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, the Regiments' officer class called them by the derogative slur Deg. It meant degraded and using the slur was frowned upon. Efforts were made to stop its use during that time, but it was not completely done away with.[4]
Notable Regiments
- The 1st, 2nd, and 4th Volpone regiments were deployed to Verghast, all under the command of General Noches Sturm, as part of the Imperial relief force sent to break the Siege of Vervunhive.[3a] Although Sturm was disgraced and stripped of his rank, he was replaced by Colonel Gilbear, under whom the Volpones and the Tanith First put aside their differences and fought together.[3c][3d]
- Royal Volpone 14th - A regiment which betrayed the Imperium and turned to Nurgle following a protracted conflict with the Death Guard warband known as the Putrid Choir.[5]
- Royal Volpone 50th — Commanded by General Noches Sturm at the time of its deployments on Voltemand[2a] and Monthax[2b][2c], where they clashed with their fellow regiment, the Tanith First and Only. In particular, there were allegations (though no formal inquiry was made) that Sturm deliberately bombarded the Tanith soldiers' forward line, out of pique that the "Ghosts" had managed to capture the Chaos stronghold which had successfully resisted the Volpones.[2a][3d] The 50th was also under Sturm's command when he won his famous victory on Grimoyr.[1b]
