Segmentum is the Imperial designation for a region of the galaxy. It is used to separate the galaxy into more manageable chunks. It is only used by the Imperium, as other races either have no need for it either because controlling only a smaller territory, or they use a different system.

The different Segmentae are:

Segmentum comes from the word segment, to cut into pieces. The galaxy is such a vast place that it would be unmanageable without this system.

Segmentum is also used in conjunction with another word to indicate the primary structure of that segment, such as the Segmentum Naval Base.
