Segmentum

The Segments of the Galaxy

Segmentum is the Imperial designation for a region of the galaxy. It is used to seperate the galaxy into more managable chunks. It is only used by the Imperium, as other races either have no need for it due to having only small empire, or they use a different system.

The different Segmentums are:

• Segmentum Solar - centre of the Imperium
• Segmentum Obscurus - containing the Eye of Terror
• Segmentum Pacificus - the Macharian Crusade
• Ultima Segmentum - containing the Ultramarines Empire
• Segmentum Tempestus - Hive Fleet Leviathan passed through here

Segmentum comes from the word segment, to cut into pieces. The galaxy is such a vast place that it would be unmanageable without this system.

Segmentum is also used in conjunction with another word to indicate the primary structure of that segment, such as the Segmentum Naval Base.
