The source link to the Games Workshop website is useless. Should I change it to point towards the Space Marine Command Squad or just upload an image from Index Astartes: Company Champions and source that instead? PowerBall (talk) 19:36, 9 September 2020 (UTC)

When you find a dead url, it's always best to check on archive.org and see if the page was previously indexed, if so, you can then get a working archived copy and swap that out in an article for the dead url. When in doubt, just take a quick look at the help pages here, plenty of stuff like this is covered, so I frequently go back just to double check. I've replaced the url in question with an archived version. -- GrumpyDilettante (talk) 01:34, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
The situation is like this - as GrumpyDilettante said first we may try to find the source on webarchive. In the case of 'Company Champion' page was archived in a good view, so GrumpyDilettante replaced it correctly. But with games-workshop site it's not always useful because in some long period there was only a 'flash' main page, that was saved on webarchive form gw-site, so we can't use it. For old links (nearly 2010-2014 years) there are a lot of links in the Lexicanum to the games-workshop site. And almost all of them don't work now (even with Webarchive page). In these case we assume that such links were active, 'believeing' in the right source. It is as I see this situation. May be other adepts will give their own opinions also.--Darkelf77 (talk) 07:05, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
Obviously checking "uncheckable" sources is tricky. But I am hesitant to give a blanket permission to simply accept them as "true". I would say it should depend a lot on what kind of information is sourced with a lost link. Amongst other considerations. In any case I am not sure if the old/ flash-based GW online shop had much lore relevant info (apart from images of the models) --Inquisitor S., Großmeister des Ordo Lexicanum (talk) 19:00, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
I meant mostly - in cases with photo of miniatures. Not background or something more important.--Darkelf77 (talk) 19:24, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
For photos at least it is relatively easy to determine if a source seems legit or not... --Inquisitor S., Großmeister des Ordo Lexicanum (talk) 17:37, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
