Talk:List of Necron Dynasties

Why?

Stupid question perhaps, but why bother with having this list, when Category:Necron Dynasties does the same, only better (for starters: it contains all of the dynasties)?

I would propose formatting it into a table with the info from Template:NecDynasty, at least this way it would add some easy overview and allow one to easily find Necrons by their colors.

Opinions? JareelSkaj (talk) 14:42, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

i'd say anything that reduce pages' clutter is a good thing, but i had no idea you could control the format of categories ?--Siegfriedfr (talk) 16:36, 3 May 2023 (UTC)
Unless someone wants to play with extensions and updating MediaWiki to the latest version - you can't. I would just leave category as-is, and manually create a table on List of Necron Dynasties like that:
Name Phaeron Capital Segmentum Colours Symbol
Nihilakh Dynasty Krispekh Gheden Ultima
Light Teal
Nihilakh Emblem.jpg
Tsarakura Dynasty Council of Crypteks Tsaremok - Unknown -
Black
Green
TsarakuraSymbol.jpg
Xonthar Dynasty Varagon Drakvir - Unknown - - Unknown -
Blue
Silver
Gold
- Unknown -
(the "- Unknown -" starts with hyphen to separate it in sorting. Gold/silver/copper and similar metallic colors can be made with gradients to make it more fancy. Final version would use templates, to make it more reusable and less code-heavy (one template for color preview and one template for a row in the table) JareelSkaj (talk) 06:40, 4 May 2023 (UTC):
dont use a wikitable, as you can't format the lines colors (to my knowledge) against the grey background, just use a simple sortable with transparent background style
also the powers that be will soon tell you that you need to source the info that you put in your table with footnotes

@1) OK :) I see that just removing the wikitable makes it borderless:
Name Phaeron Capital Segmentum Colours Symbol
Nihilakh Dynasty Krispekh Gheden Ultima
Light Teal
Nihilakh Emblem.jpg
looking at Tables help there's no specific class we're suppose to use for the data tables on Lexicanum, so... judging by templates it's styled manually with background for the table and then each individual cell... 👀 ...that's... very suboptimal and maintenance-heavy. But if that's the way you guys do it - it's not a huge problem, can do. Just saying: it's adding to the tech debt...
@2) Oh, so it's like on Wikipedia, gotta source it even if it's just repeating the infoboxes from within the articles. Not a problem. :)
BTW: Thank you for a prompt responses and info :) Appreciate it! JareelSkaj (talk) 14:30, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
only been here since 2020 so also discovering the tech debt as i go. Regarding table background, its randomly colored, but it should be just none/transparent to blend with the background on desktop, and blend in the white BG of the mobile version of the wiki, IMHO. Colors (outside of headers) really mess up with mobile view, and its what 50% people use nowadays.
Regarding borders, i suggest a simple 1px, and border-collapse:collapse, for the entire table --Siegfriedfr (talk) 16:29, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
Perhaps the format I've been trying to standardize could be used? Example: List of Rogue Traders 22:32, 4 May 2023 (UTC)
Good idea @Rooroom48, let's do that :) I would just make sources smaller (so they wouldn't take so much space) and color header to make it easier to read:
Name Phaeron Capital Segmentum Colours Symbol Source(s)
Nihilakh Dynasty Krispekh Gheden Ultima
Light Teal
Nihilakh Emblem.jpg
Codex: Necrons (5th Edition): pgs. 10-14
@Inquisitor S., Großmeister des Ordo Lexicanum - any input from you? Do you have any vision regarding the styling of the data tables? JareelSkaj (talk) 10:46, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
OK, proceeding with editing the list to the template above ^ (post-Discord discoussion) JareelSkaj (talk) 15:15, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Completed. I created Template:Color sample to support this table. Feel free to reuse it in other places. JareelSkaj (talk) 20:18, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
The light grey lines around "unknown" data look weird. Also, i'd put the source at the bottom to save one (ie the longest) column/space --Siegfriedfr (talk) 20:33, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
