"Lord" Varlak was one of the more infamous figures in recent Imperial history. The former Planetary Governor of Korsk II,[1] Varlak had been a lowly corporal before becoming a devotee of an extreme but superficially Imperial cult.[Needs Citation]

History

Varlak was a rogue psyker whose immense powers became evident when he spoke in public. Able to easily sway entire audiences to his way of thinking, he could convince even the otherwise loyal that every word he spoke, no matter how seditious, was utter truth.[1b]

Due to his inhuman charisma his rise in popularity was meteoric, soon assuming the position of Planetary Governor.[2] Declaring himself "World-Autarch" of Korsk II, Varlak announced Korsk's secession from the Imperium in 995.M41.[1a][1b]

Inquisitor Marcus was on the planet at the time and, realising the severity of the situation, sounded the alarm to the Adeptus Terra. This prompted rapid response from the Space Wolves, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, and Ultramarines, who made planetfall days later.[1b]

Though powerful, Varlak was erratic and unhinged. Not expecting such a sudden response from the Imperium, Varlak became crazed, constantly suspecting treachery and summarily executing his followers.[1a][1d] In the face of Imperial forces bearing down on his command bunker, Varlak sought to flee. His retreat thwarted by the destruction of his personal craft, Varlak desperately sought alternate means of escape.[1c] In the end Varlak was seemingly killed at the hands of the Space Marines, and Korsk II was brought back into compliance.[1e]

Though reported dead, Inquisitor Darius suspected that Varlak had in fact managed to escape to Necromunda. In 997.M41 the Inquisitor reported that Varlak had been operating on the planet under the alias of the Grand Dog.[2]
