The Vhnori Resurgence was a famous Night Lords (then known as the VIIIth Legion) battle during the Great Crusade.

Overview

Vhnori was a Terran city enclave that had once been part of the Panpacific Empire. Built into the sides of a crevasse that descended deep into the earth, it had been one of the last of Narthan Dume's domains to fall. The people of Vhnori had never taken easily to the Imperial yoke, but had since accepted it. Nonetheless the coming of the Crimson Walkers, a cabal of Psykers, gene-splicers, and warlords, changed all that. The Crimson Walkers had served the last tyrants of the Age of Strife and now sought to reestablish their power by taking over the Vhnori region. Shortly after moving into Vhnori, the old nightmares of the Age of Strife returned. Worse still, the people of Vhnori followed the Crimson Walkers as if they were loyal beasts returning to their masters rather than shunning the terrors from which they had only recently been liberated.[1]

Imperial authorities responded with the VIIIth Legion (later known as the Night Lords) once the resurgence of the Crimson Walkers became known. The Astartes began their operation with a brutal bombardment of the outskirts of Vhnori that lasted for six hours. After further showering the area with hallucinogenic chemicals, the VIII Legion finally made its move, dropping with Jump Packs into the heart of the district. The Legionaries butchered any who crossed their path, and the Crimson Walkers responded by unleashing their army of monstrosities: stich-golems who scampered on dozens of hands, ranks of braindead slaves, and demented Psykers. Nonetheless the VIIIth Legion continued to advance and the Crimson Walkers' small numbers began to be exhausted. Seeing the situation as hopeless, the Crimson Walkers attempted to flee Vhnori but the Astartes had enclosed the entire region, cutting down any who tried to escape. It is said that the VIIIth Legion allowed many to run, only to hunt them down a short time later. The VIIIth Legion performed its last duty by throwing the remaining Crimson Walkers into the chasm below Vhnori and detonating charges along the cliff edge, sending Vhnori plummeting into the earth and killing tens of millions.[1]
