Your User name is the name you choose when requesting a user account. All contributions made using that account will then be attributed to the chosen username.

Do note that Lexicanum will not allow you to change your user name later, once you have chosen it, you are stuck with it, period. Do also note that generally Editors are only allowed to possess and use one single account. Or in other words: The use of so-called Sockpuppet accounts is a banning offence.

Do also note that it is within the rights of the Lexicanum staff in charge of approving account requests to refuse such requests if the chosen user name is deemed unsuitable (see below). Do also note that your account can be blocked at a later date if it is discovered that your user name is unsuitable and should not have been approved in the first place. Note that user names that are inappropriate in another language, or that represent an inappropriate name with misspellings and substitutions, or do so indirectly or by implication, are still considered inappropriate.

So in short: Think before choosing your user name and use common sense!

Unsuitable user names

This list is non-exhaustive.

You cannot choose a User name that is:

  • misleading, because it:
    • impersonates other people
    • gives the impression that the account has permissions which it does not have; e.g., by containing the terms "moderator", "administrator", "admin", "sysop", "bureaucrat" or similar terms
    • could be easily misunderstood to refer to a "bot" (which is used to identify bot accounts) or a "script" (which alludes to automated editing processes) - unless the account is of that type
    • includes phrases such as "Lexicanum", "Bell of Lost Souls", "BoLS", or similar if they give the incorrect impression that the account may be officially affiliated with Bell of Lost Souls or the Lexicanum.
    • resembles IP addresses, timestamps or other names which would be confusing within the Lexicanum signature format.
  • disruptive or offensive, because it:
    • contains profanities or references controversies
    • is abusive
    • is racist
    • is inflammatory
    • contains or implies personal attacks
    • seems intended to provoke emotional reaction ("trolling")
    • shows a clear intent to disrupt Lexicanum
  • commercial/ promotional, for example it:
    • unambiguously represents the name of a company, group, institution or product
    • contains or is an Email address or contains an URL that promote a commercial web page
  • implying shared use between more than one person
  • confusing for other reasons
  • containing non-language unicode characters and emoji
  • random combinations of letters and/ or numbers
