The 21st Kriegs Panzer was committed to the oxide deserts of Quatara-Prime to defend coastal port and important industrial facilities by severing those objects from a suspected Ork invasion from the planet’s second continent.[8a]
Fierce fighting took place over the featureless oxide plains. Characteristically battles occurred at very long ranges as all vehicle movement was notable by tall dust columns, with no cover to disguise an attack. Battles in the highlands were concentrated on the passes and gorges, each serving as a bottleneck where the defenders inflicted heavy casualties with relatively few troops.[8a] After two years of defensive operations and limited counter-attacks the Orks had been stopped, and the 21st, supported by raised local tribal militias and freshly arrived Imperial Guard units, were now ready to go over to the offensive tactic.[8a] In one of the battles, Tank Hunter squadrons of this Division successfully held the Msus gorge in the oxide deserts of the Quatara-Prime for three days before withdrawing to new firing positions. In this battle one of the squadrons of Destroyers accounted for 17 enemy vehicles.[8b] |
