The 209th Company of the Ultramarines Legion is known to have been active during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.[1a]

History

During the Crusade, around eight years prior to the start of the Horus Heresy, the 209th Company fought for four months alongside a Company of the Word Bearers Legion on Caskian against an insectoid xenos species. At the time relations between the two Legions had been tense, due to the Emperor of Mankind using the Ultramarines to censure the Word Bearers by destroying the city of Monarchia. Nevertheless during the campaign the 209th's commander, Captain Honorius Luciel, and the Word Bearers' officer, Sorot Tchure, seemingly managed to overcome their Legions' differences and form a friendship.[1c]

Eight years later[1c], Warmaster Horus ordered the bulk of the Ultramarines and Word Bearers Legions to muster for a planned Crusade against the orks of the Ghaslakh xenohold.[1b] When the two Legions met at Calth (one of the worlds of the domain of Ultramar), the 209th Company was garrisoning Numinus High Anchor; Captain Luciel had requested this assignment in order to meet Tchure again. However, unbeknownst to the Ultramarines, the Word Bearers had fallen to Chaos and had secretly sided with Horus' great rebellion. Tchure would go on to murder Luciel as the Battle of Calth began.[1a]
