Aeronautica Imperialis is a tabletop game produced by Forge World between 2006 and 2013, then Games Workshop from 2019 onward, and represents aerial combat between two opposing forces in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Aeronautica Imperialis uses small scale models to represent the various aircraft and ground based anti-aircraft weapons of the opposing forces.
Gameplay
The game has been designed to pit squadrons of between 2 and 12 aircraft a side. It represents aerial combat in a simplified manner, not as a simulation. It is generally played on a 6' by 4' board. There are 3 categories of miniatures : Fighters, Bombers and Ground Defences.[1]
The turn is divided into 6 phases:[2]
- Choose Manoeuvres
- Both players write down a manoeuvre for each Aircraft
- Initiative
- Highest dice roll wins the initiative
- Tailing Fire
- Aircraft in position of Tailing may fire upon its target
- Movement
- Players alternatively move their Aircraft
- Firing
- An aircraft may fire at a target when necessary requirements are met
- End Phase
- Determine whether a side must disengage or not
Editions
1st Edition
The game's first iteration was published by Forge World (company) in 2006. Two rulebooks have been published :
The models for the 2006 edition were the same scale as the Epic game system, but the two were not compatible as the game mechanics and table top scales are quite different. The miniatures line was discontinued in 2013.
2nd Edition
The game was relaunched under Games Workshop in 2019 , in a 8mm scale :
