Baldo Umbaldi[1b]
Baldo Umbaldi is a traitor warlord, who claims to rule the deserts of an unknown hive world.[1a]

History

Once a warlord (perhaps leading hive gangs) in one of the planet's hives, he was cast out and left to die in the hostile desert wastes, possibly for Chaotic allegiance or psychic powers. Thought to be long since forgotten by his former hive's inhabitants, he survived, becoming far stronger and more powerful, eventually emerging as the leader of thousands of loyal warriors, each willing to die for him. Viciously guarding his territory from trespassers, he waits for an impending Tyranid invasion, which he plans to defeat and return to the hive as its saviour.[1a]

Warning

Let it be known!

I, Baldo Umbaldi do declare that all who pass beyond this sign are doomed to die a slow and agonising death, torn limb from limb and left to rot in the flaming pits of Chaos for all eternity, for the crime of trespassing upon my sacred territory.

...

Only I have the power to give life in this forsaken place. Return from whence you came. Go back to your accursed hive. Tell all you see about me, Baldo Umbaldi, for one day I shall return. As sure as the sun rises each day, when this world grows old and the Great Devourer comes, I shall return, to be your salvation.
So turn back now, weary traveller, for your journey is not yet done.

Umbaldi left a sign to warn travellers from the hive not to enter his domain on pain of torture and death, and stating his history and planned return. Apparently illiterate, Umbaldi signed it with a X mark by his name.[1a]

Power

It is unclear if Umbaldi has psychic powers, is aligned to Chaos or simply claims great power. As well as temporal control of the desert and sole possession of the power to give life there, he claims to be able to kill unwanted travellers by a number of excruciating methods:[1a]

  • Tearing limb from limb and burning in the pits of Chaos
  • Setting on fire and burning all flesh
  • Infestation with pustulent boils and stomach eating maggots
  • Death by the lashing, choking and corroding effect of the wastes' acidic sand storms

Equipment

Baldo Umbaldi uses a slug-thrower gun (similar in design to a small heavy stubber), and a chainsword (with "An eye for an eye" written along the length of the blade). He wears a spiked helmet and a large fur coat, carrying a large respirator on his back to allow him to survive the harsh environment of the wastes. Having lost his right leg, he uses an ornate replacement peg-leg.[1a]
