Simen Urvin Macharius Bonin[4a] was a Scout Trooper of the Tanith First and Only regiment.[1]

Biography

Early Life

Bonin was born in County Cuhulic on Tanith to a family of fruiters a few years prior to 745.M41. His birth was a difficult one and his childhood was marked with bad omens and misfortune, including both an illness that nearly killed him and his family's house burning down. Despite this, Bonin's mother believed that he had been born under a lucky star and that everything would balance out in the end.[4a]

Among the old families of Tanith, it was tradition that a child would not be named at birth, but at baptism (the thought being that naming a child at birth was premature and that a child would "grow into" their name). Thus, until his baptism at the age of eight, Bonin was known to his family as Mach. Ultimately he was named for his father, one of his uncles and Lord Solar Macharius (whom his mother greatly admired).[4a]

Sabbat Worlds Crusade

Bonin was among those Tanith who enlisted in the Astra Militarum during the planet's first Founding in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade.[1]

His abnormal luck continued to follow him throughout his career. On Menazoid Epsilon, Bonin survived unscathed when a concussion round vaporised the three men next to him and on Monthax a las-bolt missed his face by the narrowest of margins.[4a]

In the closing stages of the Siege of Vervunhive, Bonin was one of thirty Tanith selected personally by Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt to take part in Operation Heironymo, the mission to infiltrate The Spike and assassinate Heritor Asphodel. While trying to board the vehicle, Bonin and a Volpone Guardsman lost their footing and fell over a hundred metres from the wall of the Spike.[2][4a] He was thought dead but, to Gaunt's amazement, Bonin somehow managed to survive the fall. However, he suffered a multitude of broken bones (including sixteen vertebrae) and required extensive augmetic implant surgery on his back and pelvis.[4a]

Later, while the regiment was deployed on Hagia, Bonin formed part of the Recon Spear that ranged ahead of the honour guard led by Gaunt to recover the remains of Saint Sabbat prior to the evacuation of the planet.[3a] He was wounded while fighting Infardi cultists in the Battle of Bhavnager[3b] but again survived.[4a]

In the course of the Phantine campaign, Bonin was chosen by Gaunt to participate in Operation Larisel.[4b]
