Gaius Pollandus was a Primaris Space Marine of the Ultramarines.[1]

Biography

Recruited from the world of Talassar, Pollandus's entire youth was a brutal struggle and this aided him in his entry into the chapter as an Aspirant. He began his career in the 10th Company as a Scout, seeing his first action on Chorgon II against the Orks. During the war on Thanax, Pollandus's squad spent several months severing rebel supply lines in the planet's frozen polar reaches. By this point, the Neophyte's body had accepted his Gene-Seed and as a result he was promoted to Reiver Squad Agamnus, first seeing action in this new force against the Thousand Sons on Hespian. While fighting against the T'au on the Eastern Fringe as part of Strike Force Callepsean, he landed a killing shot on an Ethereal as an Vanguard Infiltrator. This act saw him promoted to a full-fledged Battle-Brother of the 9th Company.[1]

As part of the 9th, Pollandus learned much of wider battlefield strategy and inter-squad tactics, eventually joining an Eliminator Squad during the battle against the Necrons on a forgotten Tomb World. During this war, his sniper squad engaged in tense duels with Necron Deathmarks. However, they were pulled out and redirected to Macragge when Death Guard forces pushed through the Phyrae Cordon to threaten the Factory World of Vansor V. It was during this battle that Pollandus first saw use as a Hellblaster, fighting through the Servitine Ambush and the Battle of the Iron Steppes in this capacity. However, during the great engagement on Vansor V known as the Forgemaw's Push that Pollandus' squad was all but wiped out and he and Sergeant Daros faced a Death Guard Defiler alone. The duo were successful in bringing the creature low, though he overloaded his Plasma Gun's Machine Spirit in the process and it took him months to recover from his injures. Afterwards, he was promoted into the ranks of the 8th Company.[1]

Now an Incursor, Chaplains noted that Pollandus was now a burning well of hate and anger that needed these emotions expunged before he could join the Battle Companies. He was thus assigned to an Aggressor Squad as part of Strike Force Calistus as they struck out to break the Siege of Hastoria against the Iron Warriors. During two years of fighting Pollandus vented his hate and was promoted to an Inceptor and performed a beachhead operation that earned him the Honour of the Iron Blade. Afterwards he saw action as a Repulsor Executioner crewman and briefly reassumed his role as a Vanguard Space Marine, pushing back the Orks of the Charadon Sector. His actions during the war allowed him the right to finally join an Intercessor Squad, and in this role he hunted down the Night Lords terrorizing the Sanctimus System, battled Tyranids on Horthis' Bane, and participated in a 3rd Company assault upon the Chaos Knights of House Ghast. Following this daring mission Pollandus became a Sergeant of the 6th Company and led a squad of reserve formations attached to Captain Galenus' 5th Company as part of the Drakon Crusade, where he lost an arm. Having fought in the much-reduced 5th Company for so long, Pollandus and his two surviving brothers were promoted permanently as Intercessor Sergeants.[1]

Pollandus continued to serve with distinction in the 5th Company for several decades, traveling from one war zone to the other. Eventually, he and his squad held a choke point in complex agri-caverns for six days and nights against endless waves of Tyranids. His performance during this battle saw him promoted to the First Company. As part of the 1st he was part of a mission alongside the 4th Company against the Traitor Titan works on Agator. His last deployment was in the defence of the Medicarum world of Phaetos on the fringes of Ultramar. There, he fell while single-handedly holding back a Death Guard assault against the Apothecarion-Primus facility while the rest of his squad evacuated before being killed by Deathshroud Terminators. His brothers launched a blistering assault to reclaim his body, and this has allowed him to be interred on his homeworld of Talassar. His armour and weapons were returned to the Chapter Armoury to await their next user.[1]
