Gulthorg the Blighted is a Nurgle Chaos Lord, who commands the corrupted Space Marine Chapter known as the Sons of Rot.[1]

History

In M42, he became a commander of one of Abaddon the Despoiler's Ark of Omens, after Gulthorg pledged to use it to track down one of a series of artefacts known as a Key-Fragment. Each Fragment had a unique warp signature and Gulthorg's Ark, Ogre, tracked its location to a fort on the Fortress World Cortosa III. However while he had pledged to focus on recovering the Fragment and then return it to Abaddon, Gulthorg decided to corrupt Cortosa III instead. The Chaos Lord intended for the Fortress World to serve as his seat of power, to build a suppurating empire in Nurgle's name and would only return with the Key-Fragment once Cortosa III was his. With that, Gulthorg unleashed the might of the Ogre against the world, along with the various forces that composed his Balefleet.[1]

These included Gulthorg's Sons of Rot Chapter, along with the Morbidax Traitor Guard Regiments, the Chaos Knights of House Gnaw, the Dark Mechanicum Vivisector Squadrons of Archmagos Ovloch and the long-time rivals of the Plaguecrows and Vermin Guard Warbands. The Warbands' Champions were sworn enemies as well and had only offered their allegiance to Gulthorg so that the other could not gain the Chaos Lord's sole favor. With this might at his command, Gulthorg's forces began invading Cortosa III, before the Adepta Sororitas and Black Templars stationed within the Cortosa System could reach the besieged world. He would also unleash viral weapons upon the Fortress World, which reduced those struck by them into slime, that Daemons serving Abaddon's ally Vashtorr crawled out of. Even with all these forces at his command, though, the Imperials defending Cortosa III fought back fiercely against the invaders.[1]

After days of fighting, their attacks forced Gulthorg and the Sons of Rot to return to the Ogre, in order to defend it from the Imperials. Unbeknownst to the Chaos Lord, however, Abaddon had planted Alpha Legion members within the Balefleets to circumvent any Ark commanders that refused to follow his orders. When Gulthorg reentered the Ogre, its Alpha Legion acted at once to claim Cortosa III's Key-Fragment for Abaddon. Using hijacked Vox channels, they issued orders to a large portion of the Chaos Lord's forces, to attack the fort that held the Fragment. It was successful and Alpha Legion escaped with the Key-Fragment, while the Imperials advanced to capitalize on Gulthorg's ground forces now being horribly out of position.[1]
