House Chass was a Noble House of Vervunhive on the planet Verghast.[1a]

History

House Chass was one of the oldest and most powerful of Vervunhive's noble houses at the time of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. Chass achieved most of its power and fortune from its dealings with mechanical components, in particular cogitators and servitors. However, the leader of House Chass at the time, Lord Heymlik Chass, was seen as weak. This was exacerbated by the fact that, unlike the Lords of the other powerful Houses like Anko and Croe, Chass was often critical of the leadership of High Master Salvador Sondar.[1d]

Despite the perceived weakness of its leader, House Chass held a unique power amongst the Houses of Vervunhive; in the aftermath of the Trade War between Vervunhive and Ferrozoica, High Master Heironymo Sondar entrusted House Chass with an amulet encoded with a system-slayer capable of destroying any cogitator or computational system in the hive, to be used as a final sanction should a High Master undeserving of power ever seize control of Vervunhive.[1f]

In the aftermath of the Siege of Vervunhive, Vervunhive was formally dissolved by order of Warmaster Macaroth, the hive having been reduced to ruins in the Siege. Houses Chass and Rodyin became the collective leaders of a newly-founded hive far to the south of where Vervunhive once stood, with Heymlik's heir Merity Chass becoming the first woman to govern a hive collective on Verghast. This new hive was focussed on mining and servitor engineering.[1g]
