Cover Description[1]

The 114th Mordian Iron Guard, pride of their world, renowned for their heroic actions at the Siege of Defure, are deployed to the mining world of Belmos VII, unaware that a terrible affliction plagues the local populace. As the Guardsmen attempt to track down the source of the corruption, panic spreads and the brave men of Mordian soon find themselves surrounded by enemies, both from within the Belmosian population and from without...

Synopsis

Prologue

Fernand Hool has just turned eighteen, and in the endless gang rivalries of the hive city on Mordian he has never set foot outside, he believes he is unlikely to survive the day, much less the year. Attacked by two youths from another gang, he suffers a broken arm and leg, and is on the verge of being killed when Sergeant Polk of the 114th Iron Guard appears, informing them that the Regiment needs a tithe of new recruits, and they have just been selected. He orders the two youths to help their new "comrade", Hool, to the nearest medicae station, warning that all three of them had better be alive and present at the recruiting station the following day, or he will know the reason why.

Part One

Barely a year after finishing basic training while en route to the 114th's next theatre, Hool is now a Guardsman, as the Regiment is finishing suppressing a heretical rebellion on Elisenda.
