Kosdorf was a city on the planet Voltemand, regarded as the second city of Voltemand after Voltis City.[1]

After Voltemand's capital city was taken by Imperial forces in the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, the planet's emergency government and the Administratum directed an Astra Militarum detachment to secure Kosdorf.[1]

The expedition was regarded by many in the Guard, including most of the officers present, as a waste of time that could have been assigned to the Voltemand PDF, due to Kosdorf having been reduced to a ruin in the fighting to retake Voltemand from the forces of Chaos. However, General Noches Sturm of the 50th Volpone wished to punish Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and the Tanith First and Only for taking Voltis City after his own Volpone had been unable to do so. Sturm ordered Gaunt to take command of the expedition force.[1]

This force of roughly 20,000 Guardsmen was spearheaded by the Tanith, supported by a Litus regiment and units of the Ketzok Armoured.[1]

The main thrust of the operation was delayed by the Ketzok supply trains and so Gaunt decided to lead an advance group to scout out the city. While there they encountered the surviving inhabitants of Kosdorf, who had been corrupted by their experiences in the war and attacked the Tanith. Gaunt sent Trooper Caffran back to the Imperial lines with a message for reinforcements before leading the rest of the Tanith in a fighting retreat through the city, eventually meeting up with the rest of the expedition with minimal casualties. The city was then targeted for an artillery bombardment by the Ketzok.[1]
