Meryn was a Guardsman of the Tanith First and Only regiment (also known as "Gaunt's Ghosts").[1][2a][4]

Biography

Early Career

Meryn was one of the original Tanith members of the regiment, holding the rank of Corporal when the Tanith First was founded.[2a][3] He was one of the younger Tanith Guardsmen, but was regarded as reliable nonetheless.[5c]

In the Sabbat Worlds Crusade's assault on Caligula, Meryn was on a troop-ship which was shot down by a psychic storm over Nero Hive. Thanks to the leadership of Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, the survivors of the crash managed to make it off Caligula and reunite with the rest of the Crusade.[2b] He was later part of a Tanith detachment assigned to escort a supply convoy from Aurelian Hive to Hive Calphernia, driving a track-bike with Trooper Caffran manning the guns.[2c]

By the time of the Menazoid Epsilon campaign, Meryn led one of the regiment's platoons.[1]

When the Tanith First were deployed to reinforce Vervunhive as it was under siege by the Ferrozoicans, Meryn was one of the defenders of the Hass East Fort, serving under Sergeant Varl.[3]

Post-Verghast

At some point following the Siege of Vervunhive, Meryn had been taken under the wing of Major Rawne. A number of the Ghosts noted that Meryn had changed as a result of Rawne's mentorship, with Meryn becoming far more ruthless.[5c]

In 771.M41, as part of the Tanith deployment on Phantine, Meryn was selected personally by Colonel-Commissar Gaunt to take part in Operation Larisel[5a], commanding the operation's second team.[5b][5c]

Trivia

Conflicting sources

It is unclear when exactly Meryn was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant: he is first referred to as Sergeant in the novel Honour Guard.[4] However, the following book in the Gaunt's Ghosts novel series, he is stated at different points to be a Corporal[5a][5c] or Sergeant[5c] (notably it swaps in the same section).[5c]
