Puriel was a past Supreme Grand Master of the Dark Angels Chapter, who took part in the Great Crusade, Horus Heresy, Caliban's civil war and the War of the Beast.[1a]

History

He was originally named Castagon and was among the Dark Angels that were trained on Caliban, by Luther during the Great Crusade. Castagon would later be among the last recruits that Luther sent to reinforce the crusading Dark Angels Legion before his betrayal during the Horus Heresy's Zaramund Campaign. Castagon would survive the Great Crusade, the Horus Heresy, and the civil war that destroyed Caliban. Sometime during that period, he would take the name Puriel and claimed that Castagon was no more. He would go on to rise to become the Dark Angels' Supreme Grand Master, some 30 years after the Chapter's first Grand Master, Farith Redloss, was slain by a member of the Fallen. Upon his ascension, Puriel learned that the traitor Luther still lived and was imprisoned within a Stasis cell within The Rock. He desired to know more about the Fallen and interrogated Luther about them and hoped to get the traitor to confess his treachery. Luther would give him neither and Puriel left in a rage. The Grand Master would later return during the War of the Beast and asked if it was true that Luther received visions of the future. Luther was unsure if he was being shown the future, but during their conversation a series of visions showed a battle with an Ork horde and the corpse of Puriel. The traitor would not tell Puriel of this, but he did bring up up the name of The Beast. When Puriel questioned him about this, Luther related a story from his youth where he and a group of Knights had fought a Caliban Great Beast known as the Horn of Ruin. The Great Beast would be slain at their hands, though the Knights' leader died in the battle. It was a great victory, however soon afterwards, another Great Beast would arise for them to hunt and the Horn of Ruin became a memory of the past. After the story was done, Puriel asked if it was a warning or some form of guidance? Like the Knight's leader, was the Grand Master to die while breaking the last of The Beast's strength. Luther would give him no clear answer, only that what happened to Puriel was unimportant, as their would always be another beast. Puriel would leave afterwards[1a], but visited Luther several more times, before his death.[1b]
