The Siege of Gottgaard was a battle of the Psychic Awakening.[1]

Overview

The battle began when the Ork Bad Moons attacked Gottgaard, an Agri-World that would see countless worlds starve if it fell. Hundreds of Imperial Guard Regiments, scores of Sisters of Battle Preceptories, and over a dozen Space Marine Chapters were mobilized for its defense. Among them were the Space Wolves led by Logan Grimnar himself, who hoped to curb the Great Waaagh! of Ghazghkull. The Champions of Fenris had been fighting on Gottgaard for weeks and held onto the outer bulwarks of the Laanesgart Bastion, defeating waves of Orks. When Grimnar received word that the Barbican of Saint Hermesinda had almost fallen, he ordered the Champions of Fenris to redeploy from the Laanesgart Bastion.[1]

Rushing straight into the fray from their gunships, the Wolves were rapidly enveloped in a brutal melee against hulking Nobz and Meganobz as well as Ork walkers. Meanwhile, Long Fangs and Eliminators were caught in a fierce ranged duel with Ork heavy weapons teams. Grimnar realized that his warriors could not win by brute force and ordered his forces to use the shattered masonry to their advantage. The Wolves lured Lootas into the close confines and ambushed them while the Ork Stompas were countered by battle tanks. Even at high speeds, the Wolves vehicles struggled to avoid the punishing firepower of the Stompas. Land Raiders, and Repulsors managed to outflank the Stompas and opened fire with heavy weapons, taking them down by targeting weak points. When the dust settled, the Orks had been beaten back. It had been a bitter fight but the Wolves had prevailed. But as the Champions of Fenris regrouped, word reached Girmnar that the Bad Moons had breached the Glacis of Steel, demolished the Hecktaris Crownwork, stormed the crucial Ioche Bastion-line, and overrun the 11th Gottgard Holdfasts Regiment. Summoning transports, Grimnar prepared for the next stage of the battle.[1]
