Sliding Jak

A battered, headless corpse was thrown from the shadows. Spike and Lukas stepped back hastily as the gruesome body landed at their feet. The two men gaped with horror at the sight before them. They saw the familiar snake tattoo on the well-muscled arm. It was Sliding Jak, or what was left of him.

Sliding Jak was an outlaw in Necromunda's Hive Primus who worked for the crimelord Balthazar Van Zep. Well built and tattooed, Jak may have belonged to House Delaque (having a snake tattoo on his arm), but he is remembered for giving Van Zep a list of names under torture – "Sliding Jak's list" – which assassin Lothar Hex, the Widowmaker, was given in order to kill all Van Zep's traitors and their associates; the killings led to civil unrest and fear throughout Down Town and culminated in the death of the settlement's most feared gang leader: Gideon Drexlar.[1a][1b][2]

Sliding Jak's List

Van Zep became suspicious of Sliding Jak after noticing that his takings were down and credit was missing; he had him tortured to extract a list of names and then had him brutally killed and decapitated. Van Zep then used the list by calling in all his men two at a time, showing them Jak's battered body and telling them that he had given a list of names before he died: the guilty who tried to fight their way before even waiting to see if their name was on the list were killed in this way. Van Zep also gave the list to his assassin, Lothar Hex, with instructions to kill everyone on the list, and their people.[1a]

Hex worked his way through the list, even killing Guilders, wiping out entire holes and targeting respected gang leaders, including Gideon Drexlar, the most feared in Down Town. As many of the people on the list were from the settlement the atrocities there caused widespread fear, unrest and even looting: even after the Guilders doubled the Watchmen's rate few were willing to volunteer. After killing Drexlar, the last name on Sliding Jak's list, Hex returned to Van Zep, reporting complete success.[1b][2]
