An Imperial Autogun[1]

Slug-thrower is a term referring to a range of firearm types which fire a solid projectile. The bullets are usually made of metal, plastic, or ceramite. The term includes stub weapons (stubguns and heavy stubbers) as well as more advanced auto-weaponry.

Subcategories of slug-throwers

Auto weapons

Main article: Auto weapon

Auto-weapons are automatic firearms and include the autopistol, autogun, autocannon, and macro-cannon. However, some automatic slug-throwers are still classified as stubbers by the Imperium of Man.

Shuriken weapons

Main article: Shuriken

Shuriken weapons are largely distinguished by the shape of their slug, which is extremely flat and sharp. They are used primarily by the Aeldari.

Stub weapons

Main article: Stub gun

Stub revolvers are very similar to modern-day revolvers; reliable and powerful, but slow to reload due to lacking a separate magazine. The only common downside is loading all six, seven, or ten chambers, which can be done faster with a speed-loader (a kind of clip). Single-action revolvers have the additional downside of requiring a hammer to be manually cocked for each shot, making them slower to fire one-hander.

Stub pistols are semi-automatic (self-loading), like the modern-day Colt M1911. They are less reliable than revolvers, but make up for it by having removable box magazines, and as such are quicker to reload with larger capacities.

Main article: Heavy stubber

Heavy stubbers are similar to 20th century heavy machine guns, such as the M2HB Machine Gun, in that they are belt fed, high rate of fire ballistic weapons. They are typically either pintle-mounted on vehicles or mounted on tripods or bipods.

Other

  • Rifles include assault rifles, carbines, sniper rifles, and submachineguns.
  • Shotguns: These are popular onboard spacecraft and with Adeptus Arbites troops. They can fire either a heavy solid slug or a shell containing a large number of tiny pellets, called 'shot' which disperse outwards. The impact of a mass of shot is great at short ranges, but quickly becomes less efficient at distances. These come in a few styles; pump action, assault and 'sporting'. Assault are semi-automatic or fully automatic shotguns, and sporting shotguns are typical over/under or side-by-side double barreled shotguns.
  • Shootas: These firearms tend to be lacking, mechanically. They are unreliable and work because the Ork believes so. They are inaccurate, but when they do hit, they do massive damage.
  • Big Shootas: These are Orkish versions of the heavy stubber. They function in the same manner, with exception that the user usually fires them from the hip.
  • Sluggas: These are similar to stub-pistols.
  • Kroot rifles: A black powder weapon used by the Kroot. Blades are attached to the muzzle and stock to improve their usefulness in melee combat. These weapons are designed to be rugged and strong, and are often adapted to fire charged pulse rounds.[2]
