Toivo is a Flesh Tearers Primaris Captain, who once served as a Unnumbered Sons Greyshield in the Indomitus Crusade.[1]

History

He was among the Greyshields who joined the Flesh Tearers, in the aftermath of the Devastation of Baal. However, he was not welcomed by his Chapter Master, Seth, who claimed the Primaris were an insult to everything the Flesh Tearers had suffered. He went on to say the newcomers did not belong in his Chapter and Seth did not care if Lord Commander Guilliman or Commander Dante had demanded it be so. This enraged Toivo, but he held his tongue as he was caught off guard by the hatred Seth had for them. The Chapter Master went on to say that Guilliman had slighted the Flesh Tearers, by sending Toivo to them. He knew the Primaris Captain's name was an old one from Terra's northern continents, which meant Hope. In his eyes, Seth felt Guilliman sought to have Toivo and the others Primaris heal the flaws of his Chapter. But to Seth, the Primaris would only weaken the capabilities of the Flesh Tearers.[1]

At this, Toivo had enough and remarked that he was not glad to join Seth's Chapter either. Instead the Primaris Captain wished he could have remained a member of the Unnumbered Sons. At that, Seth told Toivo he could leave and then headbutted him. The Primaris Captain became angered, but remained calm and asked the Chapter Master to test him no further. To this, Seth said Toivo had been sent to him to be tested and would fight him if the Primaris Captain wished to join the Chapter. This confused Toivo and he refused, which led Seth to tell him he would die a coward then. At that, the Firstborn Chaplain Appollus appeared and leveled a Plasma Pistol at the Primaris Captain's head. An enraged Toivo declared their actions to be heresy, and claimed that Guilliman and Dante, would have Seth's head for his actions. Seth remarked that they were not there, but he was and Toivo would die if he did not fight him. Seeing that there was no way to escape, Toivo agreed and as he readied himself, he remarked about Seth's fearsome reputation. However to the Primaris Captain, Seth looked small and that the Primaris were designed to be better and stronger than the Firstborn. He did not mean it as an insult, only factually stated and by the will of Guilliman Toivo would be Seth. Seth doubtfully questioned that in reply, before launching himself at Toivo. Despite their size and strength differences, Seth overwhelmed the Primaris Captain and beat Toivo into unconsciousness.[1]

The Chapter Master then told Toivo that strength and theory were not enough to be a Flesh Tearer. Intent mattered. Then even though he was defeated, Seth moved to continue to attack Toivo. It finally took Chaplain Appollus to intervene and stop the Chapter Master before the Primaris Captain was killed. Seth then knelt before Toivo and said that if the Primaris were stronger than the Firstborn, then that meant the Black Rage would be stronger in them as well. And if that was true, Seth continued, then how long until Toivo joined the Death Company? The beaten and disfigured Primaris Captain had no answer to that, as he lay broken before Seth. However after looking at Toivo's shattered face, the Chapter Master claimed he now looked like one of the Flesh Tearers. With that, Seth told Chaplain Appollus to help Toivo to his feet, as the Chapter Master walked away.[1]
