He was among the Word Bearers' that joined the Sons of Horus Captain Ashurhaddon's efforts to break the Imperium's grip on Cthonia, even as the Siege of Terra raged. When their counter-invasion began, Ul-Buus was assigned to act as a missionary and councilor to the Reaver Attack Squad Chieftain Kovarny. Soon the Traitor Legions began to overwhelm the Imperial Fists and Imperial Army stationed on Cthonia, but faced resistance in the in the Traitor's Gate Hive. Kovarny's Heathens Squad was later charged by Ashurhaddon with killing the Imperial Fists Captain Garrius, who led the Imperials there. With Garrius dead, the Sons of Horus still on the Hive World's surface, would be able to finally consolidate together. However when Kovarny later gave his Squad their mission, Ul-Buus was surprised to hear the Chieftain claim Ashurhaddon wanted Garrius alive.[1]

While the Heathens Squad grudgingly accented this, the Dark Apostle would question their orders. He stated capturing Garrius would be a danger task to undertake, but Kovarny immediately brushed off his concerns. Ul-Buus continued his questioning however, and asked if the Chieftain knew the Imperial Fist at all. Kovarny replied that he did not, but Garrius was in fact well known to the Dark Apostle. This led Ul-Buus to believe that Garrius would be too an dangerous opponent to capture alive and doing so would come at a great cost to the Heathens. The Dark Apostle also knew Ashurhaddon and stated the Captain had been quite clear in wanting Garrius dead. Kovarny noted Ul-Buus' objections, but the Chieftain knew what his orders were and the Squad began leaving to carry them out. Ul-Buus went to follow the departing Heathens, but was stopped by Kovarny, who warned the Dark Apostle not to question his orders again. What followed next were a series of battles within Traitor's Gate, that always ended with Garrius escaping and Kovarny losing a large number of his Squadron's forces. After their latest devastating loss, Ul-Buus privately confronted the Chieftain alone as he sat atop a Hive canyon wall, about his connection to the Imperial Fists Captain. The Dark Apostle had figured out that the two were friends and that Kovarny sought to spare Garrius' life by converting him into worshiping the Chaos Gods. But while Ul-Buus thought that plan was laudable, he told the Chieftain it would not work, as the Imperial Fists Captain had made it clear he would not betray the Imperium. The Dark Apostle then urged Kovarny to remember the brotherhood he shared with his Squad and the cost in lives the Chieftain's vainglorious quest had cost them.[1]

Kovarny stood up at this and Ul-Buus readied to defend himself, despite the Chieftain claiming the Dark Apostle was right. However Ul-Buus still kept his guard up and was proven right to do so, when Kovarny suddenly charged at him. Despite being ready, though, the Dark Apostle was overwhelmed as the Chieftain screamed that Ul-Buus would not understand the brotherhood he and Garrius shared. Kovarny claimed the Word Bearers were nothing but serpents, who had caused the Horus Heresy and led the Chieftain and Garrius to being on opposing sides. Kovarny then tore the Dark Apostle's jaw off, before sending Ul-Buus plummeting to his death in the canyon below them. After confirming Ul-Buus was dead, Kovarny readied his Heathens to begin seeking out Garrius once more and ignored their questions about the Dark Apostle's whereabouts.[1]
