Valia-Maximal was a Hell Forge in the Belt of Iron, that originally served the Imperium before joining Warmaster Horus' forces, during the Horus Heresy.[1]

History

Before that, it was the heart of an independent empire that spanned over two dozen Systems, which had also fought off the predations of the Hydrinoxis Conclave. This changed, though, when Valia-Maximal was discovered by the Imperium's 114th Expeditionary Fleet, during the Great Crusade. While diplomatic talks began between the two, the Forge World's magi had no desire for an external ruler and attempted to forcibly expel the Imperium from their territory. This backfired dramatically and resulted in the 114th Expeditionary Fleet waging a war to bring Valia-Maximal into Compliance. This proved to be a humbling experience for the Forge World, as its Legio Laniaskara, was no match for the Expedition, led by the Raven Guard Legion and aided by Graia's Legio Astraman. When it was evident Valia-Maximal would fall to the Imperium, the Forge World's leaders surrendered, but not all of the Expedition's forces received this news. This resulted in the further deaths of hundreds of thousands and the destruction of several prominent Forge cities by Legio Astraman's weapons, before all hostilities finally ceased. Though its Titans had done so out of ignorance, the loss of the Forges cemented Graia as a hated name amongst the people of Valia-Maximal.[1b]

This grudge would play out decades later, when the Horus Heresy began and the Belt of Iron was enveloped in war between the Loyalists and Traitors. During the Cataclysm of Iron, Valia-Maximal joined those Forge Worlds that turned upon the Imperium and attempted to wrest control of the Belt of Iron for Warmaster Horus. However the main focus of their attacks was the Loyalist Forge World Graia, whose persecution was carried out by Magos Dominus-Alpha Hieroneyum. The war against Graia would continue, even after most of the Traitor forces were defeated and the Loyalists began to retake the Belt of Iron. However the end finally came, when Hieroneyum's Ordinatus Valia was destroyed in battle with Legio Astraman on Nalindeer. The Magos Dominus-Alpha's death threw the battle plans of Valia-Maximal into disarray, as none could fill the void of leadership that Hieroneyum left. The defenses that he had created to safeguard his Forge World, chiefly the chain of Fortress Worlds known as the Blood Iron Worlds, kept Graia from quickly enacting its vengeance. By the time the Loyalist Forge World finally reached Valia-Maximal, the world had been abandoned and its population had safely escaped Graia's wrath.[1c]
