Vigilius is an Imperium world that lies at the fringes of the Empire of Mankind[1] and was struck with disaster when the Great Rift was created. As the warp storms that formed the Great Rift first began to rage around Vigilus, they spewed forth hordes of Orks that soon invaded the world.[2]

However, Vigilius had been infested by the Chosen Sons Genestealer Cult, which came to the world's defense. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Cult was able to defeat the Orks, and save Vigilius. When the Imperium learned of their victory, they heaped praise upon the Chosen Sons, assuming them to be merely an army of armed civilians, and the Cult's true nature has thus far remained undiscovered. Several expeditions of the Adeptus Mechanicus have also come to Vigilius in search of valuable archaeotech, but all contact with them has been lost. The Mechanicus has assured the Imperium that the expeditions are simply working on the world in secrecy.[1]
