Vinyar was captain of the Marines Malevolent vessel, Purgatory.

History

Spoiler!
This page contains spoilers for: Salamander (Novel)

He attempted to "lay claim" to the stricken Mechanicus Forge-Ship, Archimedes Rex and all its contents (armour, weapons and ammunition), stating that he would put them to use against the enemies of the Imperium. He was, however, opposed by the Third Company of the Salamanders chapter, who ordered him to relenquish the vessel and its contents to them and, in turn, the Adeptus Mechanicus. Vinyar then threatened to destroy the ship's generatoria, thereby cutting off the life support systems and rendering any rescue of the survivors void.[1]

His plan backfired when Captain N'keln, aboard the Vulkan's Wrath, warned that any action taken against the Archimedes Rex or Librarian Pyriel and Brother-Sergeants Dak'ir and Tsu'gan (now in Vinyar's custody) would provoke the Strike Cruiser to fire upon them.[1]

Reluctantly, Vinyar handed the ship over to the Salamanders and retreated, but not before teleporting a fraction of the contents to the Purgatory.[1]

Vinyar's determination could not be foiled, however, and followed the Salamanders to a dying volcanic planet known as Scoria, where he aided them in one of their most desperate hours. In exchange for his services, he demanded the equipment cache of the Archimedes Rex, which Chapter Master Tu'Shan grudgingly handed over in honour of the compact.[1]

Vinyar may have been successful in his accumulation of the ship's contents, but his actions earned himself, and indeed the entire Marines Malevolent chapter, the ire of the Salamanders, a First Founding chapter.[1]

Notes

It should be noted, that although the Marines Malevolent had no legal claim on the Forge Ship's contents, they had desperate need of them. For example, Sergeant Lorkar's squad all wore Mk VI Corvus-pattern armour and used antiquated versions of the Mk Vb Godwyn with lengthened stocks and extended shoulder rest, which were drum-fed and affixed with sarissas (a saw-toothed bayonet-style blade).[Needs Citation]
