The War of the Golden Cog was a conflict that erupted between the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Officio Assassinorum, sometime between M37-M40, when the Fabricator General of Mars claimed ownership of the riches within the Fortress of the Soulless on Terra. The Fortress though, was the domain of the Culexus Temple and the Imperium's assassins soon attacked the Mechanicus' forces when they entered the Fortress of the Soulless. A disastrous civil war between Mars and Terra was averted by a sniper’s bullet, but the artefact known as the Golden Cog was obtained by the Adeptus Mechanicus, when they left the Fortress.[1]
