On the top right corner of your screen you will find the User buttons. These are only available to registered and logged-in users. They serve a variety of purposes that will be detailed below.

Overview

The User buttons

From left to right:

  1. User name: this takes you to your personal User page. This page offers a user the possibility to present himself/ herself or his/ her hobby-related projects. This service is reserved for active users and contributors of the Lexicanum. You are not allowed to use up our webspace if you are not actively involved in the project.
  2. Talk: this takes you to your personal User talk (also known as "user discussion") page. This page can be used by other users to contact you to discuss issues.
  3. Preferences: this takes you to the Preferences (also known as "settings") of your user account. Here you can change and edit a number of settings related to your account and Lexicanum work interface.
  4. Watchlist: the list of pages you are monitoring for changes
  5. Contributions: the list of your contributions to the Lexicanum
  6. Log out

Preferences

Preferences are the user options for browsing, editing, searching, notifications, and more. A link to your Preferences page is available at the top of every Lexicanum page (see "User buttons" overview above). Another way to get there is by navigating to the Special:Preferences page.

Here you can control much of the Lexicanum user interface through the many feature settings provided by the MediaWiki system: skins, date formats, a signature, and more:

User profile

Here the details of your account are displayed and you can edit a number of personal details and settings:

Basic information

This information is not public.

Basic infotmation
  1. Username: your chosen user name. This is the name under which you will appear in the Lexicanum
  2. Member of groups: here the organisational groups of the Lexicanum which you belong to are listed. Apart from "normal" users these groups can include "Administrators" and "Bureaucrats" (only if you are one, obviously).
  3. Number of edits: the number of your edits in the Lexicanum (i.e. how many changes you have done)
  4. Real name: your real life name (optional) - this can be edited by you.
  5. Password: here you can change the password for your account.

Internationalisation

This information is public.

Setting this preference is optional. The software uses its value to address you and to mention you to others using the appropriate grammatical gender.

  1. Language: here you can specify the language for the Lexicanum system user-interface messages. This does not affect the language of articles and other pages made by editors.
  2. How do you prefer to be described?: Option to specify your preferred pronoun in order for the software to grammatically refer to you correctly.

Signature

This information is public.

Here you can specify your Signature, i.e. what is displayed when you digitally "sign" your (for example) User talk page contributions. Your comments on talk pages should be signed with "--~~~~" (2 x "-", 4 x "~"), which will be automatically converted into your signature and a timestamp.

You also have the option to check the box for treating your signature as wikitext (without an automatic link directing people to your User Page). This is however not recommended as it just makes life harder for other users.

Email options

This information is not public.

Here the email you provided when requesting your user account is displayed. You can also change it here. It is needed for password resets, should you forget your password. You can also choose to let others Lexicanum users contact you by email through a link on your user or talk page. Your email address is not revealed when other users contact you. In addition you can check (or uncheck) the following options:

  2. Send me copies of emails I send to other users
  3. Email me when a page or a file on my Watchlist is changed
  4. Email me when my User talk page is changed
  5. Email me also for minor edits of pages and files

Appearance

Here you can edit and change the "web browser experience", i.e. a number of technical settings related to how the Lexicanum interface appears on your device:

  • Skin: Choose the "skin", or "theme" of how Lexicanum is displayed.

  • Date format: Option to set your date and time preferences; this is how dates will appear in article History pages, logs, etc.

  • Time offset: Shows the server time (UTC) and the local time based on the optional Time zone setting. You may opt to use the server time (UTC), have the offset calculated by the clock in your computer, or specify an offset from UTC in hours or by location. This does not affect times saved in editable pages such as timestamps in signatures.

  • Files: The images in an article are just a thumbnail (a preview). These will always be one of eight possible Thumbnail sizes. For the larger screen sizes choose the maximum, and for the smaller screen sizes choose the minimum thumbnail size.
Files
  • Diffs:
    • Option to not show page content below the diffs; checking this will suppress the page preview of the difference you're viewing.
    • Option to omit a diff after performing a rollback.
Diffs
  • Advanced options:
    • Choose to display hyperlinks with underlines in your browser window always, never, or by browser or Lexicanum-skin default.
    • Format links as stub links when the article they link to is smaller than the threshold you set on file size. Stub link formatting changes the link color to the dark brown displayed in this option's text. This option can help you see links to small articles (more likely to be stubs) so that you might expand them. It is also useful for spotting links to disambiguation pages, which are also relatively small. They are usually linked to in error, but often contain on their list a link to the correct article, making this error easy to fix.
    • Show hidden categories.
    • Number section headings.
Advanced options

Editing

In this section you can specify options related to writing and editing articles in the Lexicanum.

General options

Here you can check (or uncheck) the following options:

  1. Enable section editing by right clicking on section titles
  2. Edit pages on double click

Editor

Here you can change the Edit area font style and check (or uncheck) the following options:

  1. Mark all edits minor by default
  2. Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary
  3. Warn me when I leave an edit page with unsaved changes
  4. Show edit toolbar
  5. Enable enhanced editing toolbar

Preview

Here you can check (or uncheck) the following options:

  1. Show preview on first edit
  2. Show preview before edit box
  3. Show previews without reloading the page

Labs features

Here you can check (or uncheck) the following options:

  1. Enable side-by-side preview
  2. Enable step-by-step publishing

Recent changes

Here you can specify the settings of the overview over Recent changes (see "Navigation" menu bar to the left of your screen):

  1. Days to show in recent changes (max. 90 days)
  2. Number of edits to show by default

Advanced options

Here you can check (or uncheck) the following options:

  1. Group changes by page in recent changes and watchlist
  2. Hide minor edits from recent changes

Here you can specify the settings of your Watchlist (see "User buttons" menu bar for location and sections below for more details):

  1. View and remove titles on your watchlist
  2. Edit raw watchlist
  3. Clear your watchlist

Display options

Here you can specify the display settings of your Watchlist:

  2. Maximum number of changes to show in watchlist (max. 1,000)

Advanced options

Here you can check (or uncheck) the following options for your Watchlist:

  1. Expand watchlist to show all changes, not just the most recent
  2. Hide minor edits from the watchlist
  3. Hide bot edits from the watchlist
  4. Hide my edits from the watchlist
  5. Hide edits by anonymous users from the watchlist
  6. Hide edits by logged in users from the watchlist
  7. Reload the watchlist automatically whenever a filter is changed (JavaScript required)
  8. Add direct unwatch/watch links to watchlist entries (JavaScript required for toggle functionality)
  9. Add pages and files I edit to my watchlist
  10. Add pages I create and files I upload to my watchlist
  11. Add new files I upload to my watchlist

Token

This is the secret key to the web feed of your Watchlist. Anyone who knows it will be able to read your watchlist, so do not share it. If you need to, you can reset it.

This User button takes you to your Watchlist, i.e. the list of pages you are monitoring for changes.

At the top of the page you can choose the following options:

  1. View relevant changes
  2. View and edit watchlist
  3. Edit raw watchlist
  4. Clear the watchlist

The page also tells you how many pages are currently on your Watchlist and if your Email notification is enabled or not. Pages that have been changed since you last visited them are shown in bold. You also have the option to mark all pages visited.

Additonally you can change your display settings under Watchlist options, hide specific kinds of edits or edits by specific user groups, specify the Namespace, invert the selection and more.

Contributions

This page shows your contributions (your User contributions) to the Lexicanum, i.e. the edits you have made to Lexicanum pages. It is an automatically generated page that lists any change, deletion or addition that an you have made in any namespace on the Lexicanum.

Your customizable view of your (or other users') User contributions

This allows you to check your own contributions to refresh your memory about which pages you have worked on (and to easily access them again), and also to find out whether there have been any subsequent edits. This can be a useful quick alternative to accessing your watchlist, particularly if your watchlist contains a large number of pages.
