According to the machine itself, they were created long before the rise of the Imperium and were unleashed by their creators. They functioned by entering into the blood of their victims and caused it to burst from their hosts which left whole worlds drowning in blood. However, the Bloodtide was bested and they were imprisoned beneath the earth to sleep for eternity and it became known only as a legend to the rest of the galaxy. Prior to that point, the Bloodtide was many with each being a spark of will but during their slumber it had merged into a single being. This sleep would be disturbed by Voldorious who bound the ancient weapon to his will. However, it did not desire to be bound to a life of servitude but its creation prevented it from ending its own existence.1-p175 It is capable of taking a silver human form with a luminous shape with a disturbingly serene expression on its face with deep solid blood red eyes. The body rippled and swirled which was immune to weapon fire which impacted the fluidic form that did not harm it.1-p173 Its silvery figure displayed neither male nor female features nor did it show a young or old face. However, an intelligence was capable of being gleaned from the eyes of this construct.1-p174
The Bloodtide formed before a detachment from the Raven Guard Chapter where their weapon fire did not fell the entity who, with simple gestures, released micrscopic motes at the Astartes. This caused Brother Meleriex to falter as he started retching a great torrent of blood onto the ground.1-p173 Shahan a Scout Marine fell victim to the Bloodtide and even his Adeptus Astartes enhanced physiology did not prevent the blood from flowing from his body.1-p172 However, it determined that the Raven Guard were enemies of Voldorious and attempted to commuicate with Sergeant Kholka where it desired to be destroyed in order to prevent it from being abused by the hands of Voldorius.1-p174 This is because the Bloodtide had worked to defy the will of its Chaos master and explained that it needed to be burnt in order to end its existence though explained that a portion of its being had been taken to infect a woman who was intended to spread the Bloodtide.1-p175 Kor'sarro Khan later came before the Daemon Prince where he faced an obstacle of raw Bloodtide in his path which needed to be burnt in order to clear his way where it is seemingly destroyed.1-p187
