The '''Scholastia Psykana ''' is a school for psykers on Earth that is run by the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. Most of the psykers discovered by the Black Ships will receive training there for five years, before being sent for further training or service elsewhere. Those deemed to weak or dangerous or old are instead sacrificed to the Golden Throne, in an arcane ritual that allows the Emperor to continue to live. All psykers encountered by the Black Ships are taken back to Earth, but children and young adults are preferred by the Scholastia Psykana, as these are easiest to train and indoctrinate. It is invariably those recruited as children that are given further training to fill important positions in the Imperium (one well known example is the inquisitor [[Gideon Ravenor]].
The vast majority of the psykers that are discovered are trained for service as Astropaths. Astropaths are psykers specialised at interstellar communication, and they are able to send and receive psychic messages over vast distances. The Astropaths form one of the cornerstones of the Imperium, since without them, the constant stream of messages back and forth through the galaxy that are necessary for the functioning of the galactic Imperium would be impossible. They are deployed throughout the galaxy, wherever there is a need for fast interstellar communication. All astropaths undergo psychic training which moulds their powers and at the same time teaches them to resist the warp. This is known as the [[Soul-Binding]] ritual and only the Emperor is powerful enough to perform it. They are led before the Emperor, where he re-shapes their minds a hundred at a time. They endure several hours of pain, and some do not survive, despite years of preparatory training. Those that do are often blinded and sometimes lose the sense of touch, smell and taste, but this is made up for by vastly increased powers. In a sense, the emperor gives a little piece of his own being to them.
