Tarnash was a Guardsman of the Tanith First and Only.^[1a][1b][1c]

He and his squad were wiped out in an ambush by the Blood Pact while the Tanith First were fighting to retake the city of Cirenholm.^[1b][1c]

Conflicting sources

At different points in the novel The Guns of Tanith, Tarnash's rank is given as Trooper^[1a] and Sergeant.^[1c] It is possible that he received a field promotion to Sergeant during the assault on Cirenholm, but this is not confirmed in the source.
