Bell of Breaking

The Bell of Breaking is a brutal artefact of blackened iron, that is a relic of the Death Guard Traitor Legion's First Plague Company.[1]

History

It is forged from the weapons and armor of those who had fallen to the First Plague Company and is rung seven times before each of their campaigns. During the Bell's ringing, the Plague Company offers their foes a chance to surrender and accept the gifts of their patron Chaos God Nurgle. However should the offer not be taken before the final seventh ring is carried out, then the First Plague Company will begin their attack. To ring the Bell of Breaking is a great honor and it is done by a member of the Plague Company, who strikes the artefact seven times. Tradition holds though, that the Bell must be split by the toller's seventh blow. Should they succeed then the toller will be able to ring the Bell again, once it has been reforged. If they fail to do so, the Bell will still be reforged, but the former toller will be used as an ingredient. Once this is done, then another member of the First Plague Company will take the honor of doing so. The Chaos Lord Ammar, is currently the Bell of Breaking's toller and he has held the position for a century.[1]

Trivia

The Bell of Breaking and Ammar were created by the Games Workshop employee Rhuairidh James for the White Dwarf magazine's 2023-2024 A Tale of Four Warlords competition.[1]
