Marquand Volker

Marquand Volker[1]

Marquand Volker was an Imperial prisoner in the Expendables Penal Legion, who served alongside his friend Ulli Leitpold.[1]

History

Before they were captured, Volker and Leitpold were infamous pirates, who preyed upon the Imperium's minor Segmentum trade routes. This also caused them to fight Orks and two called upon this experience, as the Expendables were charged with capturing the Supergun Da Kablammer, during a war between the Imperium and the Xenos. They were deployed in one of their Penal Legion's battalions and after landing on the world containing the Kablammer, it charged towards the Ork building, that held the Supergun. Like all Expendables, though, the prisoners were accompanied by armed guards, who would ensure they completed their mission. However the battalion had to fight through the Orks to reach the building and by the time they entered it, all of the Expendables' guards had been killed. In order to ensure that this was true, though, Volker immediately shot the bodies of the guards that were near him.[1]

Afterwards, Volker and Leitpold met with the surviving Expendables of their battalion and took command of their fellow prisoners. With their guards dead and them in command, Volker and Leitpold were excited about the treasures they could now claim for themselves. But due to their experience fighting with Orks, the two knew it was likely that the Xenos were waiting around a corner to ambush them. They then turned to their group and Volker told Leitpold to leave it to him. He then gave a frightening speech that warned the Expendables of the terrors that awaited them, should the Orks defeat the Imperium and win the war. His soaring rhetoric inspired the group and they ran off, eager to fight the Xenos. Volker and Leitpold of course stood back as their occurred and watched as their group clashed with a number of Orks. When only one Expendable and Ork remained, however, the two opened fire and killed them, as they felt the fight had been dragging on for too long.[1]

This left the pathway to the Da Kablammer clear and the two take any treasure they find along the way. Once they reached the Supergun, Volker took control of it and they both searched for something to shoot with the weapon. Leitpold then saw that an Imperial Penal Transporter Ship had just landed near the building and he pointed it out to Volker. Though Leitpold said that it might be deploying more Expendables, Volker used the Kablammer to destroy the Transporter. They broke out laughing afterwards and Leitpold joking said that Volker would be executed by the Imperium for what he just did. This immediately angered Volker, who pointed a gun at his friend and declared that why would he be executed, when it had been Leitpold's idea. Leitpold then pointed a gun at Volker and was angered that his friend would place the blame, for the Transporter's destruction, on him. They then fired their weapons at each other and were both left mortally wounded. As they laid on the ground, Volker said Leitpold's name, who in turn waited to hear what his friend wanted. However they both died, before either one of them could say anything more.[1]

Trivia

Warhammer Monthly 63's stories starred Warhammer 40,000 characters that were based on Warhammer Fantasy characters, and vice versa as well. The Penal Legion prisoners Marquand Volker and Ulli Leitpold are based off of the Empire mercenaries, Marquand Volker and Ulli Leitpold.[1]
