Noctis Labyrinthus, "the Labyrinth of the Night", is a region of Mars between the Valles Marineris and the Tharsis upland.[1a]

The region is famous for its maze-like system of valleys going to the depths, with steep walls. The valleys and canyons of this region were formed by faulting and many among them show classic features of grabens, upland plain surface preserved despite descending on the valley floor. In some spots the valley floors are rougher due to landslides, and there are spots where the land appears to have sunk, forming pit-like areas.[1a] The leading theory is that the faulting was triggered by volcanic activity in the neighboring region of Tharsis.[1b] The area is as close to empty as it can be, as those adepts of the Adeptus Mechanicus who attempted to found their forges there were plagued by technical problems and angry Machine-spirits. Some stayed and formed the Cult of the Dragon.[1c] Below this area is the chamber where the Dragon of Mars is imprisoned.[1d]

The mines inside the Labyrinth were supposedly contaminated during the Great Purge, so anything that enters - metal or flesh - is destroyed. This is a false claim, to stop Adepts of the Mechanicus from going inside.[2]
