The Bleeding Chalice is the second novel in the Soul Drinkers series by Ben Counter.[1]

Cover description

Long years have passed since the Soul Drinkers Space Marines were declared excommunicate traitoris and many Imperial agents have been dispatched to destroy this once loyal Chapter. Sarpedon, the stoic leader of the fallen Marines, has become hellbent on finding some way of curing his battle-brothers of the cursed mutations inflicted upon them.[1]

Synopsis

Following the events of Soul Drinker, the Soul Drinkers are fighting a losing battle to maintain their genetic stability in the face of mutation. In pursuit of a solution, they must track down several leads to try and get back to a facility they once saved to retrieve a sample of pure genetic material they might use to stave off their genetic issues.[Needs Citation]

While this takes place, an Inquisitor by the name of Thaddeus pursues them at every step, using all the tools at his disposal to catch up to the renegade Chapter and bring them to justice. And as both parties work to achieve their own goals, a heretic psyker by the name of Teturact schemes to set in place a new empire of bloat and disease and death.[Needs Citation]
