Chieftain was a title given by the Sons of Horus Legion to its junior officers and came from the tribal gang culture of their Homeworld Cthonia's Underhive.[1]

Description

There the title was given to a gang lord's most loyal coterie of warriors and each Chieftain was entrusted with command of one of the gang's war posses.[1] The Sons of Horus would follow suit and Chieftains could lead formations of Reaver Attack Squads.[2][3] The Chieftains would earn their rank through loyalty, honor and sheer bloody-handed violence in battle. Their dedication and quality were then measured against countless foes and never found wanting. They were also seen as their Legion's Champions and Chieftains often sought out their enemies' most revered heroes. In this way, they tested their mettle against the best fighters their foes had to offer. In rare cases, however, Chieftains would be asked to set aside their duties of command in order to fight together in bands of five. These Chieftain Squads, then fought beside their overlord or had the honor of safeguarding a hero of the Sons of Horus and bearing his banner onto the field of battle.[1]
