Orgustine Zola is a member of Inquisitor Grendyl's retinue serving a leadership role with the rank of Explicator. The Inquisitor is implied to have selected her personally as Explicator for his operations on Atoma Prime. She was given the rank of Explicator due to her personal history and knowledge of Hive Tertium gained from growing up within the Hive City.
Overview
She was born in the Torrent, a rundown slum of a district within Hive Tertium. A district the Administratum gave up on long ago, and who's enforcers have been paid off by the local Water Cartel. She has no love or allegiance to the Water Cartel that runs the district or those in power that had forsook it. She "fought like Hel" escape it the Torrent, but still sees Hive Tertium as her home, flaws and all. She remains faithful in her dedication to protecting Tertium and in redeeming it from the heretics that now infest it. She sees the Inquisition as Atoma's last hope.[1]
History
Torrent
Zola grew up in the Torrent alongside her brother Tibiron Zola. He would eventually be Tithed, called to serve the Emperor in the Imperial Guard. Having her brother taken away by the Tithesman would greatly upset Orgustine, whom Tibiron fondly refered to as Stina.[3]
Zola would struggle without her brother's protection. She would have her cut from criminal jobs stolen from her by other gangers. One of these gangers was named Makko, whom lead a crew bullying zola and stealing her dubious earnings. Not long after she would sneak into his hab, kill him in his sleep, and subsequently take over his crew. Sometime after, one of the gangers, Hellick, would comment on how much better things were after Zola started running things.[3]
Just like everyone else in the Torrent, criminal or otherwise, they answered to the Ragged King and he got a cut of everything. Eventually he would hear of Zola, who was making a name for herself in the criminal world and earn a place on the Ragged King's court. Her ability and ambition would be a cause for concern to the Ragged King and he would plot to remove her. She had ambitions to die rich.[3]
Iven Rannick would arrive in Zola's hidden home, without warning, warning her of this impending betrayal and offer her a place in the Inquisition as an informant, a Wyrmwood agent. She would decline and threaten to kill Rannick if she saw him again. But before leaving Rannick would provide her with a means to contact the Inquisition, a dataslate with vox freqs and call signs.[3]
The Ragged King place a bounty on Zola and her crew's heads and task local Enforcers to kill them during a subsequent heist. The primary bounty would be Zola herself, wanted dead, and the Ragged King would only pay if they had the corpses to prove it. Two of her crew, Brask and Togger, would die initially during the encounter and Hellick would be gunned down when he and Zola attempted to get out. Sergeant Strokka and Enforcer Malka were 2 of the enforcers involved in the encounter. With no one to turn to and enemies, Zola who narrowly escaped death would make the call to the Inquisition as Wyrmwood.[3]
After 3 days she would still receive no response. While contemplating her limited options Makko would appear in her home, having survived Zola's point-blank execution by las pistol. The Ragged King rebuilt Makko, at no small expense, with aid from his backers in the Hourglass. The Ragged King owned Makko. Now the Ragged King tasked him with killing Zola, a task he looked forward to greatly. Sergeant-Major Morrow would unexpectadly make an entrance, alongside the Ogryn Brunt, killing Makko and extracting Zola. They would fight their way through additional gangers sent by the Ragged King to reach the Inquisitorion's valkyrie evac.[3]
Inquisition
Now a member of the Inquisition, Initiate Zola would get settled in on the ship and have time to get properly introduced to Morrow and Brunt. She would also begin using the Inquisitorial rescources to find out what happened to her brother who got tithed. The voidship would seemingly leave and return to Atoma. Zola was told by Rannick she would never have to see that world again, but circumstances had changed. Zola would take this opportunity to settle old scores, taking Brunt planetside to pay the Ragged King a visit. She would attempt to violently coerce the Ragged King into working as her informant, breaking his arm and threatening to bring down the Adeptus Arbites on him. This was far less discreet than what Rannick requested of Zola. Despite her brash and bold methods, her initiative opened up a new line of investigation, which Rannick reluctantly applauded.[3]
Sometime after, Zola and her Inquisitorial peers would join Lady Emora Brahms aboard her ship the Mourningstar. Not long after their arrival, Rannick would notify Zola that Grendyl is promoting her to Explicator. Rannick would emphasize that her will be keeping an eye on her, as well as task her with getting on good terms with the Rogue Trader.[3]
Explicator
Rannick would receive word that an Adeptus Arbites exaction squad has a Moebian 6th Captain of interest aboard the Tancred Bastion, Captain Biron Wolfer. The timing of his resurfacing apparently being a coincidence. Rannick would request that Zola bring this prisoner to him to talk to and she would leave to do so immediately.[3]
After Wolfer's escape Zola would begin to press-gang hundreds of condemned criminals into Inquisitorial service. Adding much-need, and expendable, manpower to the warband. Grendyl would approve all of this.[3] These convicts and other rabble would eventually be referred to as the warband's "Rejects".
Magos Kharib would join the warband subsequently and confirm that the Tertium Blight is not natural and that Warp corruption is confirmed. Magos Kharib would recommend immediate Exterminatus, much to Zola's shock and distress. Rannick would calm her stating that destroying Atoma was not an option. Grendyl had invested too much time and effort in it, but the Blight would complicate the operation.[3]
Zola has a keen interest in the interrogation of Wolfer and his closest commanding lieutenants Rodin and Rinda Karnak. If for no other reason than to find out why they betrayed the city that they all once called home. Like the rest of the Moebian 6th, Wolfer and the Karnak Twins were recruited from Hive Tertium. Zola sees they're dedication to the betrayal and defilement of Hive Tertium as a "dark shadow" to her dedication to protect the city. So she has a personal obsession with hunting Wolfer and the Twins down and making them answer for their betrayal.[2a][2b]
