Volcanus Mountains
The Volcanus Mountains are a mountain range on the planet Armageddon, located south of Hive Volcanus.[1]
The mountains are bisected by a ridge known as the Mannheim Gap. To the southeast the mountains lead down to the Volcanus Ridge, which leads on to the Plains of Anthrand.[1]
Third War for Armageddon
The area was heavily fortified prior to the Third War for Armageddon, with a space defence fortress built atop the highest of the peaks, known as Volcanus Mount. The orks were able to assault the mountains from Volcanus Ridge. In the battles that followed, not only were the orks able to capture the defences mostly intact, but they routed 17 regiments of Armageddon Hive Militia.[1]
Attempts to retake the fortress failed until the arrival of Space Marine reinforcements. Seven regiments of Hive Militia led by Commissar Yarrick assaulted the ork positions from the front, followed by a second wave comprising the Asgardian Rangers. Imperial casualties were very heavy, but the tide was turned by the Iron Champions, who attacked the orks' rear in a massed drop pod assault. The fortress was secured once again.[2]
