The Cordon Impenetra is man-made boundary of Imperial Sub-sectors within the Octarius Sector, that surround the on-going Octarius War.[1]

History

The Cordon Impenetra was a creation was devised by the Inquisitor Nashir Sahansun, who believed the Xenos conflict would spill into nearby Imperium Systems. He encircled the outer areas where the Octarius War was being fought and stated that this would be the location for the Cordon Impenetra. He declared those Imperial worlds within it to be lost and then pushed hard for every Sub-sector bordering the Cordon to be fortified and reinforced. Efforts were made to quietly evacuate key personnel within areas declared "lost", and these missions were often done at such a level of secrecy that not even the Planetary Governors were informed. Some individuals refused to leave, while corruption saw many self-important bureaucrats and clergy bribe their way out to safety. The only world within the "lost" sectors which was retained as part of the Cordon was the Forge World of Sigma-Ulstari, which was deemed too essential to lose.[3]

Many worlds joined the Cordon, which were watched over by a defensive organization that shared its name. These planets became known as Warden Planets.[3] At the same time, efforts were made to send Imperial forces into the Octarius War in order to destabilize the warring Orks and Tyranids. This was done to ensure that neither the Ork Empire of Octarius or Hive Fleet Leviathan could break through the Cordon. Ultimately, however, these efforts failed in M42, when the Hive Fleet invaded the Cordon's Pankallis Sub-sector. The Imperium's forces raced to aid the Sub-sector's invaded Systems.[1] They included not only Imperial Guard, Imperial Navy, and Inquisition forces but also Space Marine Chapters and Deathwatch elements.[3]

Communication in and around the Cordon Impenetra is exceedingly difficult due to the presence of the Great Rift, Ork Waaagh! energy, and the Shadow in the Warp. The only way to communicate with planets within lost space is to create a chain of transmissions connected by relays, which is a long and unreliable process.[3]
