A Spirit Stone aka Waystone1 is a small, seemingly precious, stone carried on the chest of an Eldar. At the moment of the Eldar's death the stone acts like a 'psychic trap' and captures his soul and prevents it from entering into the Warp. This is done to prevent the soul being consumed by the nemisis of the Eldar: Slaanesh, aka the Great Enemy, and also as She Who Thirsts. Slaanesh still hungers greatly for Eldar souls. The stone is then brought to the Craftworld and placed at it's heart in the Infinity Circuit where the soul is quite secure. The Eldar are also able to retrieve the souls whithin the Spirit Stones again and placing it into the bodies of Wraithguards and Wraithlords. These "bodies" are then animated by the Eldar souls who experience this as a dream. This process is considered Necromancy by Eldar culture and only done as a last resort. The Eldar Warlocks who specialize themselves in this process are known as Spiritseers. Iyanden, a Eldar Craftworld with a very small population is known for its greater use of these 'living dead'.

It is believed that when enough Eldar souls have been gathered within the infinity circuits of the craftworlds, a new god will emerge; Ynnead Eldar God Of The Dead. It is hoped by some Farseers that this god will gain enough power to defeat and vanquish Slaanesh and the Eldar will be able to live without fear of their souls being consumed by the entities of the Warp.

Notes

The graphic novel Deamonifugue features these stones passingly, but names them Soul-Stones. However the Eldar Codex's name them as Spirit Stones.
