Helbrandt Grimm

Helbrandt Grimm[2]

Helbrandt Grimm is an Inquisitor,[1] who is adept at capturing subjects and in the art of interrogation.[2]

History

He was among the Imperial forces that defended Trajan-III, when the world found itself in the path of a Black Crusade. However before its Chaos hordes arrived, the Imperium's efforts to save the world were undermined, when insurgents from Trajan-III's population seized the vast underground Safehaven storage facility. It was discovered that some of Trajan-III's most prominent citizens were among the insurgents, but whether they had taken Safehaven to save themselves from the Black Crusade or to aid it, was not known. Inquisitor Grimm was then sent to reclaim the storage facility with the aid of the Astra Militarum, who stood watch over Safehaven's surface entrance. When the Inquisitor infiltrated it though, Grimm only took six Guardsmen with him for the mission. They were also under strict orders to preserve Safehaven's supplies, which would be vital for the world's defense when the Black Crusade struck. The mission quickly went awry, however, after the Inquisitor's group encountered several of the insurgents.[2]

While they appeared to be unarmed and asked Grimm's group not to harm them, the Inquisitor ordered the insurgents to be killed. This outraged the Guardsman Heinrik, who refused to do so and told Grimm that he could not kill unarmed innocents. The Inquisitor fired anyway and replied that their were no innocents to be found within Safehaven. His shots struck true and revealed that the insurgents were be part of a Genestealer Cult, when several of the large Tyranid organisms appeared to aid them. Between the Genestealer and the emergence of more Cultists, Grimm's group was overwhelmed and three Guardsmen were killed. Heinrik was nearly among them, after he was struck by a Genestealer, but the Inquisitor intervened and killed the Tyranid, before pulling the Guardsman to safety in a nearby room. The two other surviving Guardsmen of Grimm's group were already there and they sealed the room's door, before the Cult could reach it. The Cult then began hitting the door and the Inquisitor told the Guardsmen to defend it, while he tried to find another way out of the room. Unfortunately, the wound Heinrik suffered had been a Genestealer's Kiss and the Guardsman had already become a member of Safehaven's Cult. Before anyone could stop him, Heinrik opened the door and the Cult and Genestealers killed the two remaining Guardsmen. As the Cult moved towards Grimm, Heinrik apologized for opening the door and the Inquisitor returned the apologize before shooting the Guardsman's gun. His shot struck Heinrik's ammo cartridge and the resulting explosion killed everyone in the room, except for the Inquisitor. The blast had tossed him through a wall that had been destroyed by the explosion and before he could recover, Grimm was confronted by the Cult's Magnus.[2]

To the Inquisitor's surprise, the Magnus was the wife of Trajan-III's Planetary Governor, Vanderhecht. She has several Genestealers with her and taunted Grimm that he had accomplished nothing. The Magnus claimed their losses would be easily replaced and that the Genestealer Cult was already establishing a beacon to draw a Hive Fleet to Trajan-III. When that occurred, it would not matter to the Cult if the Black Crusade conquered the world or not, as Trajan-III and everyone on it would be consumed by the Tyranids. As she mocked him, though, Grimm armed himself with an explosive tipped Hunting Lance and hurled it, before the Magnus could stop him. The Inquisitor's aim was true, and the Hunting Lance struck a stack of barrels that were filled with fuel. Grimm then jump into a nearby water reserve, as the barrels all exploded and destroyed Safehaven. While the Genestealer Cult within the storage facility were all killed, Grimm emerged unscathed from the water and escaped to Trajan-III's surface. Afterwards, an emergency investigation was launched to discuss Safehaven's fate and if Grimm had taken the right course of action in destroying it. Another Inquisitor led the investigation, which was held in the Apothecarium of His Infinite Mercy's basement mortuary, and he had a psyker read the lingering memories of Heinrik's recovered body. Channeling the infected Guardsman's recall of the battle against the Genestealer Cult, led the Inquisitor to conclude that Grimm had been right to destroy Safehaven. While Grimm's name was cleared of any wrongdoing, however, another member of the investigation questioned how he had managed to survive the massive explosion. Though it stretched all credibility that Grimm still lived, and that he seemed to have the devil's luck, the Inquisitor decided against investigating him any further. With the Black Crusade approaching Trajan-III, the Inquisitor claimed the Imperium had more pressing concerns to attend to. And when the Crusade's Chaos hordes attacked the world, the Inquisitor claimed they would be glad to have someone like Grimm on their side.[2]
