The Siege of Mykana was a battle fought by the Imperium during the Great Crusade.[1]

Overview

The battle was waged in the final years of the Crusade and saw the Emperor's Children 28th Millennial under Commander Paitux lay siege to the last city upon the Human world of Mykana known as Laconis. The local techno-feudal regime utilized drug-fuelled berserkers against the Emperor's Children Assault Squads and Outriders. The Emperor's Children were able to deal with these foes but as they reached the city centre Laconis' techno-shamans activated a massive energy field, incinerating any who attempted to penetrate. The Emperor's Children were forced into a defensive war as swarms of enemy soldiers came out of the Burning Veil. In desperate need of reinforcements, Paitux was forced to endure nightly infiltrations and counterattacks. Weeks passed before their calls for aid were answered in the form of the Dark Angels, led by Lion El'Jonson himself.[1]

Assailed by The Lion and his Dreadwing in the open, the enemy was forced to withdraw as the energy field briefly opened for them to pass. The shield was able to endure a full-scale orbital barrage, but Ironwing Lieutenant Iksal Mordwen theorised that a small section of the field could be disrupted by a dense enough energy beam. A force of volunteers, primarily Jetbike and Land Speeder warriors of the Ravenwing, were assembled for the final assault on Mykana as the shattered Emperor's Children acted as a rearguard. The Dark Angels deployed a massive Graviton Cannon from the Invincible Reason and were able to hold open the shield long enough for the volunteers to enter in an attempt to bring down the shield from the inside. Though trapped and outnumbered a thousand to one, the Astartes were able to fight their way to the central spire at deep cost. Yet after an hour they were able to bring down the spire, bringing down the shield and allowing The Lion and the full might of the Dark Angels to attack Laconis. No word was given from the volunteers inside the city, with many dead due to an overdose of combat stimms to keep them fighting. Mordwen himself and a few survivors were trapped behind enemy lines and faced with a gigantic horde, but the Lion knew he could not expend resources to rescue them.[1]

However, the Dark Angels' allies would not leave their saviours to die; Paitux and his warriors conducted a Storm Eagle assault on the central plaza, allowing the trapped Dark Angels to hold out for three more hours and link up with their advancing comrades. After the victory the Lion quietly departed, offering neither praise nor scorn to the Emperor's Children but allowing them to claim the world for Imperial authorities. According to Mordwen, this was a sign of great honour and trust.[1]
