The Siege of Thanatos is a three-way conflict between two Necron Dynasties and the Word Bearers.[1]
History
The battle began when the Chaos Space Marines fell upon the Tomb World of Thanatos, defended by the legions of the Oruscar Dynasty. The Word Bearers sought the Celestial Orrery, and with a device of such power could achieve the unthinkable. However the Necrons refuse to yield, and a bloody, long-running siege began. Necron Warriors and Immortals battled across the mountainous high-gravity surface against Daemon Engines and fanatical Chaos Space Marines. The siege only ended when reinforcements from the Kardenath Dynasty arrived and crushed the Word Bearers.[1]
The war, however, did not finish there, for the Kardenath nobility are pursuing their own omnicidal campaign of destruction and desired to use[1] the Celestial Orrey to destroy all life within the Galaxy.[2] When the Oruscar Phaeron Hakmephet refused, Thanatos was reduced to a battleground between Necrons.[1] The Siege has so far lasted for centuries[2] and continues to this day.[1] In the closing period of M41, Trazyn intervened in the conflict, tricking Akanabekh into imprisonment and blackmailing the Oruscar Conclave of Celestial Guardians into allowing him to use the Celestial Orrery.[2]
