Battle Group Retributus is part of Indomitus Crusade Fleet Primus. It was personally sent by Lord Commander Guilliman to free the Iron Veil, from the Night Lords.[1]

History

The Imperial worlds there, had surrounded to the Traitor Legion and now paid them fealty. However Lord Commander Guilliman told the Battle Group not to judge them harshly for doing so. The Iron Veil had been attacked by the Night Lords for ten millennia and its population had a great fear of them. He continued by saying, that after the Great Rift was created, the havoc it unleashed made each Imperial world feel as if they stood alone. It was no surprise to Guilliman then, that when a large force of Night Lords first attacked Endlespin, the world surrendered. It then paid fealty to the Night Lords and began a cascade effect, with news of the Traitor Legion's attack spreading and causing nearby worlds to surrender as well, rather that fight the Night Lords.[1]

Some felt, though, that if Endlespin had asked for aid instead, then the Imperium would still control the Iron Veil. Its population feared the Night Lords so greatly, that even when the Battle Group caused the Traitor Legion to flee, the worlds were not free. Instead they rebelled and fought the Retributus' forces, as they would rather risk the Imperium's wrath, than that of the Night Lords. The Battle Group has retaken three worlds so far, but when a portion of Retributus reached Caldon IV, its Capital Hive Holkenved surrendered. It would be the only one, though, and the Battle Group used it as a base to begin reclaim the world. However as Retributus was transporting its forces to the Hive, they were ambushed by a large Night Lords Warband led by the Dreadmaster. Rather than fight the Chaos Lord's fleet, though, the Battle Group acted as if they were fleeing. Retributus' commanders sought to draw in the Warband into attacking Holkenved, so that it could be destroyed and the Battle Group left its forces and the Hive's PDF, there as bait. However both sides know that if Holkenved falls, then the Night Lords will reclaim Caldon IV. And from there, the rest of the freed worlds of the Iron Veil will fall into the Night Lords' hands once again.[1]
